The contents of the field used for the cross-reference are displayed.

  • Hold down the SHIFT key as you press the Left Arrow button.
  • The insertion point should be just to the right of the cross-reference you just inserted.
  • Click on Close to dismiss the Cross-reference dialog box.
  • The first footnote/endnote to a source provides the full publishing information. Footnotes/endnotes always include a specific page number or numbers where the cited information can be found. The cross-reference is inserted, but it is still not formatted as a footnote reference. The footnote/endnote begins with the same superscript number as the one that appears in the paper and is followed by a period.
  • Select the footnote you want used for this reference.
  • Word displays a list of footnotes in the dialog box.
  • Using the Reference Type drop-down list, choose Footnote.
  • MS Word will display the Cross-reference dialog box.
  • Choose Insert | Reference | Cross-reference.
  • Position the insertion point in the document where you want the secondary reference to the footnote.
  • Insert your first (primary) footnote as normal.
  • This can come in real handy for some type of scholarly or scientific documents however, in some instances, you may need to use only a single footnote for multiple references within a document.

    Remember, too, that you can format the style of your endnote/footnote as discussed in the Modifying a Style section.Microsoft Word includes a feature that allows you to add footnotes and endnotes to your documents. See Adding Page Numbers for more information on creating sections. To do this, each chapter will need to be its own section.

  • You can have your footnotes and endnotes restart their numbering in each chapter.
  • To adjust the settings of your footnote, including the numbering style, when to start and stop the numbering of your notes, etc., click on the Expand icon in the Footnotes Group of the References Ribbon.
  • On the References Ribbon, in the Footnotes Group, click either the Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote icon.
  • Put your cursor where you want to insert your new footnote or endnote.
  • They will automatically format both in-text citations and works-cited lists. To make a footnote citation, label the area of your text that you need to reference with a number (if its your first footnote, start with 1.). These citation management applications allow you to store your citations and insert them into Word. You can use the method below, or you may want to explore the use of EndNote, Zotero, or Mendeley.
